Dr. Walter Goodell was born in Vermont. His family moved to Michigan when he was five years old. His parents were both educators, and his father came here to work on his PhD in Elementary Education at the University of Michigan. After high school, he attended Central Michigan University and Michigan State University. He was drafted in 1968 and served in the US Army and in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970.
